From my understanding of it the Spartan did her thing because the Brute was about to smash HER head in well before hand anyway and needed to kill it so the mission could go on. Obviously there was enough time to try and kill it otherwise the shot would have happened and then they would have gone squish. : But its worse! No gamer would ever sacrifice himself to save an NPC. *Raises hand extra high.* I like keeping my marines. Even if they do stupid things. I actually go out of my way to "Bring everyone home." Is it a game and therefore kind of stupid? Yeah, but I like getting into my Halo games and putting myself there and doing exactly what I would try to do. : Helljumpers are not gamine boys, Spartans are serious soldiers.
