I've just seen it. It was bad. OK, it was a story about a character learning a life lesson, or a character growing. We say we like these things and that this is what we want from our stories. But the character's starting point was so unbelievable. Armies recruit youths, all soldiers start young. but they are expected to either demonstrate some innate maturity from the start or grow up quick in basic training. Are we to believe that ODSTs are boys? Almost prepubescent, gamine, pretty boys? Petulant, incompetent and unprofessional? That may describe some of the people on xbox live who play the part of ODSTs online. It may be scarily accurate, but who actually expects or wants ODSTs to look and act like that 'in real life'? We expect them to be battle hardened, mature, toughened, and competent! This was typical anime fare, the sort of stuff that people were afraid they'd see in Halo legends once they heard that the vids were anime. What is the target audience? is it non-gamers? Is it children? (Even as a child I remember being insulted and feeling patronized when it was assumed that children like childish fare.) A pivotal part of the story has a Spartan sacrifice herself to save an ODST. I think that this was the same incompetent that she had already saved 2 0r 3 times before. It was almost certain that she would be killed by putting herself in the way of that hammer strike. But its not only that: she was the lead sniper in a team sent to kill a Prophet. There was a very small window of opportunity to take out the target and she 'had him in her sights' at the time. There is no way that she would have sacrificed herself and the mission to save one ODST, especially an incompetent who had been nothing but a liability during the rest of the mission. This was just an example of 'not how real people behave' that plagues most bad fiction. But its worse! No gamer would ever sacrifice himself to save an NPC. You would put yourself in the line of fire only if you were doing an escort mission because you want to avoid a trip back to the loading screen. Otherwise you shoot the Prophet and finish the level. Can we have a show of hands? Is there anyone here who has never killed a marine for any of these reasons: to get ammo? to get a better weapon? to stop him doing something stupid? because his dialog was irritating? I've done the lot. Frankie, don't forget that this is Halo fiction. Your core audience are gamers. No real person would sacrifice the mission to save a minor team member, no gamer would sacrifice the mission for an NPC, no Spartan would sacrifice the mission for any reason. That story was a bit of an insult. Helljumpers are not gamine boys, Spartans are serious soldiers. moving on... Look at the main character's hair. UGH! Frankie are you too much in awe of these animators? If they said that hair styles are non-negotiable could you not have asked them to remember that you are paying the bills? Are you too worried about sensitive oriental sensibilities? or did you think that it doesn't matter? I could live with the hair, accept it as a limitation of the medium but its the attitude towards the characters and the situation that goes along with the hair that gets me. Maybe you didn't want to rock the boat, maybe its better to be politically astute and give them their way to keep them happy. Maybe its the fans' job to say if they are unhappy with the hair (and what it signifies). OK... I'm a Halo fan: I'm not happy with the hair and what it signifies.
