Let's not act like the manual holds all the answers, even that is still just a hint. We're supposed to be talking generally about how the story is handled and developed on the whole. Not jumping on me and PA for using Reach as just one example. Even though its included with the game, the manual is not in-game, simple as that. This is nothing to do with questioning its canonicity, where on Earth did you come up with that? You have to be prepared to accept that these days, most people do not read the manual (and developers know that, how many games these days do we just jump straight into without some form of tutorial?), so while putting story tidbits in the manual is at least providing it, it is still going to be overlooked by the vast majority. This is apparent with most developers, if you have a flip through a typical manual, its very rare you'll find anything interesting anymore. That's a shame IMO, but its a sign of the times. Games lean more on story as a key element and most people don't read manuals. Of course, we don't stop there. We put big story tidbits in special editions only, or in the damn game guides. CotU was in the LE of Halo 2 only. If you didn't buy the Halo Wars SE, you would have no idea about Ripa's history. If you didn't buy the official guide, you wouldn't even know his name was Ripa in the first place. For the last time: The Halo universe depends a tremendous amount upon external sources for much of its story and background information. One must accept that while this provides for generally far more detail within those selected media, the games themselves can suffer as a consequence. You've already agreed to this basic principle. Its great to see details appear in the games that make sense to you, being aware of all the Expanded Universe. This however comes at the cost of excluding those who have not divulged into said Expanded Universe. Why this has gone on so far is so utterly odd.
