To be honest, I've been trying not to take the whole thing too seriously.

Personally, I'm not knocking Bungie's story telling method, I just totally understand the point that Tycho was making that the story telling within the games themselves could be improved upon in certain ways and may even leave something to be desired in certain ways.

And I think Bungie did do that with ODST, having a more contained and, in my opinion, more detailed story, as well as elaborating on other details through Sadie's Story in a very nice and smooth way.
As it happens, Tycho has also said similar things about ODST.

We're jumping on the Reach example a bit harshly here, its almost scary.
The point is that there are lots of examples such as the one that sparked this whole little bit of silliness off, about the Drones and the elaboration on them that is only mentioned in Contact Harvest.
The idea about being spoon fed is a bit over the top.

All that's really been said is that many games try to make the overall story at least a little more contained within the game itself rather than having certain key areas that depend upon outside information.
You've said that Ark, and that's teasing, but instead imagine if the Ark was only explained in a novel.
Or for that matter, let's remember that we had to wait for Uprising to be completed to supposedly figure out how MC got to Earth.
