*sighs* Last I'm saying on this because its really utterly pointless.

1) We're talking about a quote from a couple of years before ODST came out. It was around the time of Halo 3 as I recall.
And even then, ODST doesn't really tell you anything about it. A few throw away lines from Buck that mean something if you know about Reach, and lose a lot of their significance if you don't. It is still left as little more than a word.

2) The lines in Halo 1 and 2, as I've said several times before, barely elaborate on what Reach was or its significance. You can gather it was important, whatever it was, but you have no idea why unless you've read the books.

Its not about not really paying attention, you can pay a supreme amount of attention to the games. But things are still mentioned that have little meaning without additional material (such as a manual, an art book, a series of novels, following Bungie.net closely, Bungie interviews and panels, etc).

Despite playing Halo and Halo 2 quite a fair bit, I can tell you that I didn't know what Reach really was until I got the novels either. It can just go over your head otherwise.
So I can sympathise with the point they were trying to make.

The Halo universe and story is diverse, but you wouldn't grasp that diversity or sense of history if you didn't stray beyond the games themselves.

For example, if I hadn't read FoR, I know for a fact that most of the 'Cortana moments' in Halo 3 would have been utterly bizarre and meaningless.

In light of this, I think Tycho made a pretty fair comment at the time about the story telling as applied to the Halo Universe and the games.
Most of the juicy story stuff is found in other media.
