In Response To: Aren't Spike Grenades basically Plasmas? (RyanTheHeretic)

: I've been thinking about the spike grenades lately, and to be honest, I don't
: want them to return in Reach.

: To me, they just seem like glorified plasma grenades. The big difference is
: that they stick to all surfaces, instead of just things that can die/go
: boom. Is that really worth the additional development time, coding,
: graphical effects and grenade inventory slot?

: Sure, they throw out spikes, but how many times has that been a game-changer
: for you? I've been lucky a few times and had someone run in front of the
: spikes, but other than that, I kinda feel that Bungie added these purely
: to say "hey look, a new grenade!".

: I'm sure many of you will say that you've got quite a few kills with these,
: but does anyone actually strongly disagree with the gist of my argument?
: Does anyone believe these are excellent additions to the Halo arsenal that
: should definitely be brought back in Reach?

: PS. if they were replaced with needle bombs (like a pink crystal that
: shatters on impact and throws out needles) then I'd find them much cooler
: and fiction-relevant.

: PPS. this topic could easily apply to the spiker too.

Yeah, in terms of the sandbox the spike grenades don't really offer much. 99% of the time, I use them to stick enemies, and the other 1% is the result of a misthrow. My guess is that the writers wanted to have a complete subset of the sandbox devoted to brute weapons for campaign. And naturally, they found their way into MP as well. As far as the campaign goes, if we don't fight brutes I don't expect to see them.

The argument that cycling is a problem is pretty much only exclusive to campaign. And if you throw the wrong grenade, it's usually no big deal as the AI doesn't really respond that quickly, unless you're playing past legendary. MP maps however are typically reserved to 2 types of grenades per map, excluding some of the poorly designed community maps.

As somewhat of a tangent, I think equipment should be removed as well. In campaign, I spent most of my equipment-related time tripping over deployable cover, flares, grav lifts, trip mines and the all-important radar jammer. The only things of use are the defensive pieces (bubble shield, regen) and the invincibility and cloak. And even then, you come across these pieces so rarely that I think it's negligible.

And in multiplayer, half the pieces aren't even used. And the ones that are don't serve a tactical advantage so much as they act as a get-out-of-jail-free card. Forgot to check your surroundings before leaving cover? It's okay, just use the bubble shield or regen. Don't feel like employing a strategy when holding and moving around the map with the oddball? Have a bubble shield. Don't feel like skillfully bouncing a grenade at an enemy? Use a power drainer, where aiming isn't necessary. And the rate the equipment typically respawns is pretty quick, so this isn't very uncommon.
