I too wondered what the real difference was at one point, but I've found plenty of differences.

Besides what has been mentioned in the thread, spike grenades are an amazing trap weapon. They did seem to be designed just to give the brutes their own grenade, but their actual function is useful mainly in multiplayer matches. For example, the fuse timer can be manipulated, as they stick immediately when contacting a surface.

The problem is people use them much the same way they would use a plasma grenade, not knowing that sometimes trying for a direct stick is less useful than sticking the floor under a jumping enemy. Or sticking a wall to avoid a charging brute. Whether the spikes kill him or not, you buy yourself a few seconds, whereas he could run past a plasma, or worse, if you manage to stick him.....
