First off how do we know Johnson and keyes set up shop in the Crow's Nest? We don't. The marines could have done that on their own in order to survive the bombardment.

And the planned assault against the dreadnought. Easy. It was planned, kinda, when it first jumped in. failing in space they hoped to accomplish it on the ground. Besides Lord Hood could have arranged it damn quick in an effort to stop Truth from activating the Ark. An assault like that wouldn't be too hard to arrange in a quick combat environment. Especially since it seemed like desperation measures.

We don't know if it is within hours of the crash landing. It could have been a day or two. We have no concrete dates on when Johnson and Keyes arrived. Also it was still kinda dark when the Chief crash landed. Light gradually came on screen. A few hours of the Chief being knocked out could have happened. Hence Johnson getting there on time (We are not going to include Landfall for time line in this case since Game > short movie).
