Blame Microsoft's Men in Black?

: Maybe Bungie ought to send out special reviewer copies locked to Heroic or above.

From reading between the lines in this and other reviews it seems that Microsoft has such a strict hold on the conditions in which reviewers get to play the game that running through the game is kind of a given. I'm pretty sure they did the same with Halo 3 (at least in the UK; I heard they rented out a hotel and then basically locked all the journalists in there for a mammoth overnight playthrough). It can't help.

That all said, I don't think you can necessarily blame a reviewer for playing a game on normal and it being over too quickly. Die-hard Halo fans will almost certainly want to play a game on Heroic to begin with, but without prior experience there's no obvious reason why anybody else would go for a setting other than Normal. I don't think I've ever done that in any another game.

Frankly I'm beginning to find arbitrary difficulty levels a bit of an anachronism nowadays, since many games auto-tune the difficulty according to the skill of the player. Perhaps we'll see that happen in a future Halo game too?
