: Heres the thing though, it barely took out the Longsword fighter, it mearely
: damaged it enough to cause it to crash in the crater.

For all we know, it merely clipped the Longsword, if that, yet still sent it plummeting.
Also for all we know, it may have been like other Covenant technology in that it could be charged to a higher power level.
All we have to go on is the games script, and they seem to consider it a serious threat to their capital ships, so we have to believe that is correct.

: All it would have
: taken for them tot ake out one anti-air battery was to just send a MAC
: blast at it thereby destroying it or knocking it into the Crater below.

MAC cannons are purely line of sight and that's going to severely limit your options and range when you're denied the benefits of employing them from orbit.
The idea in the game is that the only way to get a MAC shot at that battery would have been to send a frigate into the AA's own targeting envelope.
Now that's fine if you have countermeasures. That's what SEAD and Wild Weasel missions are all about, but there isn't many ways to spoof or jam Covenant Plasma.

I'm sure it could have been done in the old suicidal sort of way, but the game essentially tells us that Hood just didn't have the frigates to spare for that.

Its not really that outlandish.
Plenty of real life examples of ground forces launching a pre-emptive strike to destroy aerial defences before the bombers arrive.
