In Response To: Re: Will Halo even USE Natal? (Gravemind)

: Is it me, or does Natal look like something that might only work for a select
: handful of games and therefore won't make any lasting impact? I honestly
: doubt any kind of motion control will fully supplant standard controller
: interfaces. Ever. Especially not something like Natal, which bears little
: resemblance to the motion control tech used by Nintendo and Sony. Even on
: the Wii, it's not really necessary even when it works well (honestly, its
: AAA titles would've played just fine if Nintendo went with a regular
: controller and no motion control). It's even less necessary with the PS3,
: which uses the same controller design as its predecessors.

: Some things just work spectucularly well and don't really need major
: improvements, much less outright replacements. The traditional video game
: controller is such a thing. Aside from the addition of more buttons
: (necessary for more complex games) and analog sticks (necessary for most
: 3D games), things have remained fundamentally the same for the last 25
: years, current-gen attempts at motion control notwithstanding. Extra
: buttons and analog sticks were arguably necessary, but motion control...
: not so much.

I suppose the buzz surrounding the system is starting to fade just a little with the initial excitement.
I really do agree. Pretty much the main reason the Wii can get away with using such controllers is because its quite cheap for the overall package.
Cost is going to be a big factor.
Its probably not going to be too much different from the number of Playstation Eye games for the PS3. You can do some interesting things, but most console owners aren't really interested in expensive accessories, no matter how amazing they are, even when they are required to play certain games.

Recently I just bought the 360 wireless steering wheel and a few games to go with it including Test Drive Ulimited, and its with that I've seen a real use for Natal in a conventional game.
Not to drive, (who on earth would rather play with an invisible wheel rather than a comfortable actual wheel, with force feedback to boot) but to be able to look left and right when you come to junctions or for a glance to your side if you use the cockpit view, just like what TrackIR lets you do on the PC.

Though the only reason why you would need that in the first place is because MS decided it would be a good idea not to have a Right Stick on the wheel.
Its also lacking the Left Stick and Right Stick buttons.
So there are some features in racing games, like full camera control, which you just can't use with the actual MS wheel. Bit of a shame that, given how expensive it is.
Nice wheel, don't get me wrong. Just in the more favoured open-world racing games we're getting today, along with things like terminal car damage, it'd be nice if you could tell when traffic was coming.
