In Response To: I'm going to come out and admit it - (Jillybean)

: I don't really get online multiplayers. At the most it's an amusing
: distraction for half an hour but if I spend too long doing it I get bored.

I'm totally in your camp about in person vs online multiplayers. One of the best video game experiences I've ever had was taking part in the Arcade scene when Soul Calibur 2 was new. It was social and competitive, with actual people cheering and booing you, watching you to learn your style. It was a great thing to do socially, and it culminated in a state tournament, in which the matches were so challenging, focused, technical, and creative, that even though I didn't win I still walked away feeling privileged to have even had the experience.

Unfortunately, it's kind of tough to find such scenes now, since online multiplayer is so dominant, and most people would rather not go to a real arcade and spend their money. Arcades will be dead soon in the United States, and so it's something our children will never know, but it was great and I'm glad I got to be a part of at least a tiny portion of it.

I think the key is to have an excellent community. Local is better than online, but online has its own advantages. Look at Iccup or quake live or something.

Halo 3 doesn't really have a focused online community, and MLG certainly doesn't count. I really really think this is because Halo 3 was designed to be as accessible as possible, and designed to be fun first and competitive second. I'm pretty convinced that having a competitive game is the best way to create a good online community which is sustainable. After all, if your game is so good that 11 years after its release people are still innovating in their play, then it's going to have a continued following!

Call it the hardcore crowd if you want, but I think that maintaining good standing with those people is key to having a good online community. The 'casual' players aren't the ones driving the online community. Halo.bungie.org is what it is because there were some hardcore tricksters out there who loved to push the game to its limits. Sure, there are 'casual' players here who contribute artwork and fan fiction and the like, but they aren't the base by which the community is built. If Halo 1 was totally untrickable, I think Halo.bungie.org would have ended up like oni.bungie.org.

Having 'hardcore' players respect, talk about, and analyze your game will spill over to the 'casual' gamers, which will in turn create a thriving online community of both hardcores and casuals, which will make the online multiplayer better.

Halo 3 doesn't really do this. Single player is especially boring with the barriers, and the flow of the levels mostly dictated to us in advance (not the same as linearity). Multiplayer made some concessions to be more friendly to the 'casual' player. So your hardcore base for your community is extremely weak, and I think we're all feeling that right now.

The thing that's totally frustrating and ironic is that everybody these days is trying to make their games more accessible in order to appeal to everybody and have that large online community. You can probably sell a lot of games, but you will not sustain a devoted community.
