In Response To: I'm going to come out and admit it - (Jillybean)

I also think (and as Bungie has said before), that they have to walk a very fine line. On one side you have the people who pick up Halo and play the game (or games). On the other side you have the people who pick up the game(s) in addition to reading the books, or trying to understand the universe deeper, or finding every scrap of Halo-anything they can, etc.

Since Bungie has made sequels, they can't all of a sudden introduce some character or plot or plot related device that until then has only been seen in one of the novels--that would isolate the person who has just played the game(s) (and not read that novel) and they wouldn't necessarily understand the new object or understand how it fits with everything else they've experienced before. In an effort to try to cater to every possible player that could ever play a Halo game (a big task), Bungie had to stick to the story restrictions set by Halo 1. This makes sense from Bungie's perspective. They are a business who wants to cater to their fan and consumer audiences alike.
In that sense, Bungie has given the player a choice. One; they can choose to play the game(s) and be content or two; they can choose to expand their knowledge by looking at supplemental material. Bungie hasn't forced anyone to make a decision, and that leads to the two "groups" that we have today (just gamers, and then the ones who dive in [to the "pool of Halo-ness"]).

Anyway, back to Halo 3, we can see the effect of this. Halo 3 had some story restrictions set by Halo 1 (Bungie wasn't about to start introducing characters and events from the novels, etc.). So it might seem that Bungie didn't put as much into the story in Halo 3 as they did in say, Halo 1, but its because they have to work with their restrictions. Then they also add a kick@ss multiplayer component to the game in addition to a bunch of new features and community options. So, yes, I think that Halo 3 does appear to weigh a little more on the multiplayer, but it's for very realistic reasons (continuity when you get down to it).

Personally, I try to absorb as much about the Halo universe as I can. Therefore I really enjoy the Campaign and it is always the main reason for me to purchase a Halo game. In other words: I love the story. However, I also enjoy the multiplayer and community involvement that is present in Halo 3. To me the two go together and will always go together. There are times when I want to slay some Covenant, just like there are times when I want to LAN it up, just like there are times when I need to be a little competitive and try to show off. Either way, I think Bungie did a great job despite the difficulties in trying to cater to everyone. Would I love the game story to be just as rich as the books? Yes. Is that a realistic wish? No.

As for ODST, I am very excited. The story, multiplayer, community, and unannounced options will all be superb, I'm sure. I also hope that the next "Halo" (as in FPS/core Halo gameplay/Halo 4/made by Bungie/whatever) game can really take the story to the next level. Whereas there were restrictions set for this trilogy, I hope the next trilogy can embrace the story more.

I hope I made that clear enough. I'm very tired. Time to go to bed.
