In Response To: Yes (De Laal) : I'd never heard of Nylund before the Halo novels, and Dietz only because he : wrote really trashy military SF in an even trashier series. Karen Traviss was a relative unknown... until she wrote Republic Commando and Gears of War. Just because a big name like John Scalzi, for instance, would get to pen a tie-in novel doesn't make it all the more successful than if it were some relatively new author penning it, in my opinion. In tie-in fiction, one of the most important aspects is the way you present the established universe. That's something both big and emerging authors can do well if provided the proper material and doing the proper research.
