That's a good analogy. The Silmarillion is a bit choppy and hard to read in places, but I agree that learning the history of Middle Earth made it seem deeper and more "real". There seems to be a lot of hand ringing around here. I guess we're going to see that every time a new Halo book, game, movie, or coffee mug is announced. There seems to be a lot of people that have already made up their minds that they're not going to like it, even though they know nothing about it. If you don't want to know more about the Forerunner, just don't read the books. I think they have great potential, but I'm going to reserve my judgement until I've read them. I originally thought that a story that wasn't directly about the Cheif wouldn't interest me, but Ghosts of Onyx is my favorite book so far. I guess I came to realize that rushing to judgement on a new project is pretty silly.
