In Response To: Re: Greg Bear writing halo novels about Forerunner (Mercury) : I disagree. : The forerunner are the feel of Halo (they built it after all). I find them
: I'd love to see them fleshed out in a meaningful way. : I just don't want to see the forerunner of that awful ensemble MMO concept. Some things are better left unknown. That said, of course the Halo universe revolves around Forerunner technology - technology we don't know much about. That's actually what makes the feel of Halo. You're stuck on a weird ring, and the only thing you know about it is that it was built by some aliens 100,000 years ago, and then you look in the distance and notice that the horizon's missing - instead, the world stretches upward and rolls back down. Then you think, "Who in the hell built this thing, and more importantly, what in the hell is it?" That's what makes the story thrilling. Knowing all the backstory of the Forerunners doesn't make the experience too enjoyable, in my opinion. I'm a backstory freak myself, but there's a certain line where backstory is necessary and where it just gets in the way. These novels are one such example, I think. Moreover, they're dedicating three books to this setting. Unless Bungie/Microsoft are building a very in-depth universe for the Forerunners, similar to the 2500 universe, the books are just going to try to shoot three times at the same target, and two of them will probably miss.
