Since it's published online he may be screwed, there's a general idea that if you put it out there then it's covered under fair use.

And since the IP isn't his either, it's Microsoft's, he's not got much of a legal leg to stand on.

In saying that, it's very bad form not to contact him when there's an email address right above the damn poem. If you're going to go the odd route of commenting on fanfiction, you might show the contributors you're talking about some respect.

If I was him, I'd email and give them a name to use in future publications, then cite it on his CV. I'd be citing it in my CV no matter what - it's literary work published. Give him the ISBN number and trust me, it does make employer's go "hmm" when they see you have a publication. It will hopefully help any future writing career he's got planned. Even if they refuse to talk to him - it's his work, he can claim he's published in that text book.
