In Response To: Halo - a look back over seven years (Louis Wu) A little late to the party. But I'll add my story. As I'm probably older than the average HBOer I was already in my teens when I started getting into games. Earliest memory is probably BBC Acorn Micro computer and the space trading game Elite. That was around 1984. Jump forward a decade and I was going to a night school. The course was Desk Top Publishing. One evening I wanted to work on something a bit longer so the tutor said that would be OK as he wasn't planning on leaving just yet. So I carried on for about an hour and heard more voices arriving during that time. Strange as there were no more classes. I went to find the tutor when I was leaving and found him and 3 other men screaming at each other amongst the sound of gunfire. Shotguns, grenade launchers and BFGs. That was my introduction to the FPS. Doom. A 4 way LAN. My tutor then gave up his seat and tutored me the art of Deathmatch. We played for a couple of hours. It was great when I got my first kill. I was up at the night school all the time as I didn't own a PC until the first Quake which is probably why I missed out on Marathon 2 for Windows in 1995. However I do remember the preview for Halo for PC in the UK magazine PCGamer. One game that I loved for PC was Tribes with it's wide open rolling hills. Halo looked similar. By now I knew of Bungie as I'd downloaded the Marathon 2 Windows demo. I'd also bought Oni although I never got into Myth, apart from the dwarves. Strategy's not my bag.
Anyway once I had the Xbox version I'd check HBO every day for news but it seems it wasn't until the release of Halo 2 that I made my first, reading back now very embarrasing, post.
A yellow Banshee. Of course the source of all this is the Heretic Banshees.
