In Response To: Halo - a look back over seven years (Louis Wu) A little late to the party, like usual. :) Happy B-day, Halo. I'm not sure what tipped me from, "hey, this games is awesome!" to "OMG, Bungie, have my baby." but I have a suspicion it was HBO. Halo started as an excuse to avoid going to class. Countless hours were spent at a friend's apartment on campus, playing Metal Gear, or various other PS2 games, but we ended up playing nothing but Halo when he got his Xbox (not long after launch). It was a great escape from grueling architecture classes and an English class from hell, but it wasn't enough for me to start saving the cash for a console of my own. Especially considering how much I sucked. It wasn't 'till I came to HBO's front page sometime in '02, looking for a leg up in multiplayer that I got completely hooked. I think I spent a few days going through the story page, and tips and tricks. I hadn't seen a fansite for a game that was this exhaustive since playing quake. Somehow, I ventured into the forum, and ended up obsessively lurking for a while. I bought my own box, playing other games, and while I began thinking about Halo 2, I started posting here. Anyway, somehow, I got hooked on the story, speculation, and community around the game. I ended up obsessed with a game I'm mediocre at, and losing nightly when it moved to playing over live with Halo 2. I started going on IRC to find people to play with, and wasted a lot of time there too. :) Over the years, I've tried blogging about Halo, hosting a couple of things, or adding a little here or there in the community, but with school, work, and married life, I've often just gone back to lurking, and haven't really managed to hang on to much of that stuff. But I really don't see myself going anywhere, and I'm kind of a Bungie fan for life at this point. It's been a fun seven years.
