In Response To: Halo - a look back over seven years (Louis Wu) The first time I saw halo being played was by a friend of mine in college. I was a sophomore and watched him battle relentless wave after wave of flood infection and combat forms. "Give me the controller!" I cried as I fought him for the monster large original xbox controller. After several attempts, I gave up and went back to playing tekken. The next year, I started playing coop campaign with a good friend a good 1000 miles away at a different school. We started from the beginning, and I had a blast. I was hooked. Even when he couldn't play, I'd forge ahead on my own, only to play the same area with him later on that week. That summer I bought an xbox- but for Metal Gear Solid 2. Later that year I walked in on some friends playing each other over the school network. I was hooked again and went out and bought the game later that day. I have a confession to make: I used halo for my own personal gain. I held some video game nights at a church I was preaching at once a month for the entire year before Halo 2 came out. Of course, I couldn't have the area kids beating me in my own church, so I practiced constantly. It helped that I lived in the middle of nowhere outside of Williamsburg, VA, and Halo was just about all there was to do. When Halo 2 came out, I held a couple more, but didn't feel such a large need since there was xbox live. After all, I found that I wasn't holding the lan parties for the area kids so much as myself! I also found HBO around this time, and started viewing the forum every day. I moved, and Halo 2 followed me close behind. I played it every night on live, and quickly found myself some new friends whom I wish I was still close with, and my dorm hall RA in College and I soon became great friends- all over xbox live. I witnessed friends I made on live get involved with each other, and have bad breakups. I made and lost friends. I ranked up as high as I could go and de-leveled in the most funny ways possible. (yes, in halo 2 I was that guy). I joined a bunch of clans, only to realize I couldn't take the elitism. I found a great one about 8 months before the launch of Halo 3, but didn't stick with them after. In writing this, I realize how much Halo was always more than a game to me. It was beautiful escapism, a constant means of competition, a network of friends. In 2007 I met a girl and the rest is history. I'm sitting here now feeding my almost 10 month old daughter some mac n cheese and some fresh baked cookies on my day off instead of blasting people on xbox live. I wouldn't trade my situation for anyone else, but I can't say how much I miss the "wasted time" I was able to spend on Halo 1, 2, and 3. When Recon comes out I'll get that and keep on reminiscing. My greatest moment in halo? There were so many, but probably the best in my mind was at a lan a friend of mine threw for local ministers at his church about 2 years ago. It was on terminal, and it lasted a good 2-3 hours. No-one could seem to score that flag. Guess who ended up doing just that! I also discovered SWAT that night, and have had a love affair with it since. Anyways, I love this game, and I won't stop playing it for a long long time. I'll probably be that old guy that all the kids make fun of for playing whatever type of Halo is out in 60 years. Thanks bungie! : http://halo.bungie.org/news.html?item=24503 : Give us what you got!
