In Response To: Halo - a look back over seven years (Louis Wu) I'm dubious of my own "worthiness," you might say, to post in this thread, considering how many, if not most of us here have been in it for the long haul, and I am, after all, still a newcomer. Nonetheless, I'm curious to see what memories come out when I write, and Halo has been a significant part of my life, if not necessarily a long one. I was very young when Halo was released, young enough that I don't have a specific memory of the first time I played it. The only times I ever got to play video games were at my cousins' and godfather's houses, as both families had multiple consoles. We played tons of games, but one kept sticking in my infantile mind. I finally found out what it was called (can you guess? its name starts with an "h"), and according to my cousins became very annoying the way I would pester them constantly about wanting to play it. Up through the release of H2 that was the only interaction I had with the games themselves, but when my family got a reliable internet connection I started searching for and hungrily devouring any information pertaining to Halo. Reading every word on the HSP here was my first encounter with HBO; at that point I didn't really know or care that any other part of the site existed. I fell in love with the plot of the games before I had even played through the campaign of one of them. Just to give some forewarning, here comes the weepy bit about my own life.
That summer, a friend of mine who owned an xbox spent a month abroad, and let me borrow the console and his copy of Halo 2 while he was away. I finally got to catch up to everyone else. most people seem to disagree with me about this, but I love H2's campaign. Playing it gives me this feeling of joy that is really quite unique. It was a tragic moment for me when I had to return it, but as a result of it I resolved that, in spite of my parents' opposition to the idea, I would get Halo 3 and a 360 to run it on. In April of 2007 I finally got it. After extensive negotiations I bought a 360, an extra controller, and copies of Combat Evolved and H2. Playing them remained an escape for me, but I had found another way to occupy my time as well. I had finally come across the HBO forum and, under a different name than my current one, begun posting (I've spent a lot of time trying to remember what that name was, and searching the archives for possibilities, but I still haven't a clue). While I wasn't truly involved, I was able to watch and take some small role during Iris and the other pre-release hype. I one-day preordered H3 and played through it on the evening of its release, loving it unreservedly (a feeling that has passed, as I now believe it to be the least good of the three, but it was a special experience). I also made this account at HBO, and in my enthusiasm made a problem of myself. After a several-month spree of posts, most sub-mediocre at best, Louis Wu finally shut me down. I subjected myself to my own work, rereading everything I had posted, apologized, and took a week off of posting completely. I've tried to keep my posts to a reasonable number since, and I at least like to think that their quality has improved somewhat. My real involvement with the Halo community really kicked off in January of this year, when I got XBL. I was able to really connect with people, mostly from here, and form some meaningful relationships with some. That has especially been the case with the past few months and my involvement with the Spirits of Fire Clan and Hawty McBloggy's forum. It was the plot that got me into Halo, but the plot is really only a part of what keeps me here. I think the real depth of the game comes from the great people who play it and enjoy it. So in a quasi-particular order, I want to thank: Louis, Mig, and the other HBO deities, for their intelligence, understanding, and ability to form such a great community. bs angel, for creating the hawty mcbloggy forum-my other Halo-home. The members of Spirits of Fire - MendicantBias00 and JDubbs11, who founded it, SonofMacPhisto, a hilarious person who's just a joy to play with, and GreySpark, who came up with the immortal "drain the mancannon" line. Avateur, who refuses to go to any Halo site that doesn't end in .bungie.org, for being a great guy and probably my first good XBL friend. Go Sox. And of course, Bungie. Thank you for Halo.
