In Response To: Halo - a look back over seven years (Louis Wu) To say that Halo has affected me in my life is a slight understatement. Before Halo, I played games, sure, but I wouldn't have called myself a gamer. It was also something that was private to me and I didn't really talk about it. Halo changed that. Back when I first heard rumours of Microsoft's new upcoming games console, for some reason I decided to purchase it. Maybe it was because I wanted to be different, but when I got my first work paycheque I splashed out on a console, and later a TV in order to use it. Halo was, of course, the first game I played. Back then it looked SO realistic, and new, and fantastic. It took me all of 5 minutes to get used to the controls after just thinking "Left thumbstick WSAD, right thumbstick mouse", and I never looked back. Shortly after, I found this site, and started reading, and started posting. I found that there was more to a game than just the game, and eventually I had searched nearly every nook and cranny of the game, and I had found a fantastically deep understory to the game. I finished the game on normal, hard, and eventually legendary, and looking back I must have royally pissed off some friends in LANs by having practiced for so long and beating them. From enjoying Halo so much, I got into other XBox games. Back then, I just tried to buy what I could find that was similar to Halo, but eventually I grew into buying more and more genres, and right now the only game that can't catch my interest is a sports game, but I'm sure that one of them could catch me if it put in a fantastic story, and was less in-depthn on sports pedantry. I also started reading Bungie.net... this intrigued me. "You mean that game developers are cool people?". And they talked to us, to me, as part of a community. - As this was in my last year of college, and I was to apply to University soon, I put a course in Computer Games Technology down as one of my choices. I didn't think I would get in... but I did. Knowing of the people at Bungie, I jumped into the course, and although I didn't do amazingly well, my life has come together like a stack of dominoes since. I got a job in Cambridge because of my university course.
And I've gotten to know SO MANY people. All because of Halo getting me to know the people here, and getting me to see the side of Bungie, and all games developers I didn't know existed. Special thanks go to:
