In Response To: Halo - a look back over seven years (Louis Wu) Once upon a time, I was a PC gamer, right up until Dreamcast came out and I realized I could own the console and a library of games for the same price as the upgrades I would need to play the same game on my current PC. I was converted back then. But I was still pretty broke, so even though the Xbox looked just like Dreamcast 1.5, I was just too poor to bother. One night, a friend invites me over because "You have to play Halo with us". I drop in, and they're playing 4-player splitscreen (!!!) Rockets on Hang Em High. Hours later, everyone has to go because there's this weird "school" thing still going on tomorrow. I stay and the friend who invited me loads up the Maw so I can play the Warthog Run with him, and halfway through the level we quit because I have to have the system ASAP. The mall is still going to be open just long enough, and I'm lugging the gigantic brick of a system back to my dorm as fast as I can. Thousands of hours of local LAN play later, two sequels, map packs, and so forth- I'm still blown away by the original game and the initial experience most of all. To the Warthog Jump- Randy Glass and darkhelmet and everyone else who made the dream of flying finally achievable by mortal (SPARTAN) man. To dancing with Hunters- The original Hunter encounter is still my favorite battle in any of the games. Unless you count the Warthog Run. To the Flood- YOU'RE NOT TAKING ME, YOU SLIMY BASTARDS! YOU'RE ALL EATING HOT LEAD FOR LUNCH! (oh god please don't let this thing run out of ammo...) To Hamish and Wu and Mig and Frogblast and Frankie and Sketch and Jason Jones and Marty and Brian<3 and... I've got to stop now because there's probably a length limit to this thing. I've had too much fun and seen so much awesomeness from so many people that it's impossible to name them all. And lastly, thanks to my fiancee, who finally proved that Halo is not in fact a shooter. Why not? Because she hates all shooters, yet Halo is her favorite game of all time. Ergo, Halo can not possibly be a shooter. Most of all, my ass has been kicked thoroughly. And I thank Bungie for it. Please, sirs, may I have lots more for years to come?
