: 2) The Covenant - When one Pelican crashes into the back of Chief's Pelican. : This one is a little more simple, and already got pointed out pretty well in
I've always interpreted that as Chief looking back to make sure the marines are okay, that no one is going to fall out the back. A couple times as a kid, I remember times when my mom or dad had to brake hard to avoid a bad driver. These moments stand out to me because they both had the same instinct, throwing a protective arm in front of me. It doesn't matter how old I get; the passenger is their first concern. Master Chief doesn't startle easily. But on several occasions, he has shown more concern for his comrades' wellbeing than his own. In that scene, Chief is standing at the back of an open hatch; the most vulnerable place to be in a collision. When that very thing happens, his first instinct is to check on the other passengers. His attention returns to the battle only when assured that everyone is strapped in and safe--because you know that if someone were to go tumbling out, Chief alone would have the reaction time to save them.
