Re: Checkpoint bypass by highwire

Ok, I've tried stuff out and here's my report, which I guess I'll try and incorporate into the article later.

The hillside route is admittedly easier than doing the precarious highwire act. As usual I ran along to the the far end on top of the water pump house, and started clambering up the rock around the cube-like housing at the end. But instead of curving around sharply to end up on top of that housing, I continued straight on up the hill. In just a few steps it levels out, and if you then go along the hillside staying up as high as you can, you can fairly easily remain high enough to bypass the checkpoint, as SonicSniper03 must have done in that HIH thread. You'll have an annoying invisible wall on your left and sometimes you might slip down too far, but I was able to do it more often than not. Having taken that route, I have to say that I'm sure I've been along there before, and the hillside provides some nice high ground for shooting down on enemies. But maybe I just never realized about having skipped the checkpoint - or maybe I never went quite high enough to skip it.

As for the Chopper idea, it actually worked! I took the same route I've just described, except in a Chopper, using boost to start getting up the rock around the cube-like housing (slightly awkward, but doable). Once you've got your Chopper over the checkpoint you can go explore the deserted remainder of the level faster than on foot of course - not that there's much to see. I can't think of any other novelties you could use it for though - I mean stuff that you couldn't have done just by driving it along the road as normal.

If you try the Chopper thing but fail to remain high enough to bypass the checkpoint, you can end up with the Chopper up on the hillside near the Marine building, which you can then use to bombard the reinforcements that come in by Phantom. A novel firing position which you might enjoy, though I found it a bit clumsy. I tried to destroy the Phantom but without success (and this was on Easy). Is that one actually indestructible?
