I'll have to give that a go to see how easy it is. I remember trying to go up along the hillside in that area before, but not so far that I bypassed the checkpoint. Thanks for the link. Another idea: might it be possible to boost a Chopper up the hillside so that you get high enough to bypass the checkpoint? A sort of "up and over" manouvre.
