In Response To: Re: One mighty montage. (VVM) : This was a lot better then the one's I've seen recently, however I do think : Montages in general need a reboot. Today, every montage is self centered : around the person who created it - there is no attempt to tell a a sort of : story that would make it memorable. : It's a shame that nobody has sat down and thought about how to make a good
: Every time I watch a montage, I cringe at how shitty the music is - and how
: Sometimes - all it takes is a simple theme, or a beat to get something to
: People need to start trying something new, something that isn't self centered
: And for god sakes stop using crap like multitage or sticktage or retardtage. A montage with a story...like machinima? Either way, I don't think that montages have to tell stories to be entertaining. The entire point of a montage (at least under its definition in the Halo community) is too show off your all your great moments while playing the game. I completely agree with your opinion on music in montages. If I were to make a montage, I would probably use music that I personally enjoy, and I think this what people in general are doing. Unfortunately, other peoples personal taste in music is often really bad. I think for the majority of people out there, musical exploration and discovery is limited to the singles they hear on the radio. I think that music syncing with the gameplay is very important in montages, and I always enjoy montages that do this well (a great example is the montage by Shinato posted not so long ago). Overall, I think a good montage just has to feature a high level of skill to be entertaining. Most of the montages with over-edited gameplay footage tend to come from players who have just gotten lucky or play a lot of social matchmaking. Kryptics montage is a perfect example of a skillful player not needing to over-edit his clips to make them entertaining. His montage is also a reasonable length, and it seems like he took care and used only his very best clips while creating it. So basically, quality over quantity...and make sure the music is good.
