In Response To: Re: They lied about humanity, but believe the rest (scarab) : And what did Truth mean by his statement to the Arbiter on the Ark, : "Your kind never believed in the promise of the sacred rings." : From CH it seems that the Elites may have been more devout than the Prophets.
Don't judge all the Prophets by Truth's example. Truth (and Regret) weren't particularly devout because they weren't interested entirely in the Covenant religion. There are no doubt Elites too ('Refumee, for example) who weren't too fond of religion. : And Truth's motives for genocide seemed to be based on fellowship with the
: Why did he betray them? What did he hope to gain? And that's the big question, isn't it? In Halo 2, with Michael Wincott's uber-evil plotting Truth, we honestly wondered this. And then Bungie retconned Truth into the alien Jack Chick, and we never find out. Even more evidence that there was never supposed to be a Halo 3 and Halo 2 could have answered some questions left open by its sequel. : Was he worried about the Elites discovering that Humans were Forerunners?
This might well be it. The Heretics under 'Refumee might have been the catalyst for something far greater. If one Elite can figure out even some measure of the truth, can't they all? : How did he feel about betraying the Elites? We have no way to figure this one out. In none of the games or novels do we ever see him interact at length with any Elite except the Arbiter. : If he cared about the union then he must have cared about the Elites. Doesn't follow. I care about the continued existence of the United States of America, but there are a lot of people in the USA whose continued existence frustrates me deeply. : He left the Portal open so that others could follow. That was NOT a selfish act.
Does he really have any control over that? I'm of the opinion that Truth can't control the Keyship, at least not fully. : Did he hope that some Elites would follow on the Great Journey once the Rings
: We know that Elites gave their lives to earn their Journey. I assume that
Well, this really opens up a whole new can of worms, but it's possible the Covenant equate the Great Journey with physical death. In this scenario, they would know (at least partially) what the rings entail. Think Buddhism meets the Peoples Temple. In order to deny one's flesh from evil, one must ultimately destroy the flesh entirely and allow the spirit to achieve transcendence. It's an interesting idea, and made the more interesting by the fact that we just don't know all that the phrase "Great Journey" would connote to a believer in the Covenant.
