In Response To: They lied about humanity, but believe the rest (yakaman) : Their purposeful misleading of the Covenant to destroy humanity is a latter : sin committed to keep themselves in power; their original : misinterpretation of the Forerunner and the rings remains intact through : the series. From Contact Harvest - p277: (Its talking about Truth) He could honestly say that he had spent his entire life without experiencing a single moment of spiritual crisis. He had accepted the Forerunners' existence because their relics were there to find. He believed in the Forerunners' divination because in all their ages of searching, the San'Shyuum had found no bones or other remains. He knew the Covenant's core promise that all would walk The Path and follow in the Forerunners' footsteps was critical to the union's stability. Its not certain that his motives were entirely selfish. He could have cared about the union because he cared about the union, not just because he wanted the power that comes from leading the union. Note the mention of bones. I wonder if this is a reference to an early idea in the Halo Bible and I wonder if it is connected to the Flood's appetite for calcium. Was the original idea that the Flood 'ate' all the bones? I wonder if the Covenant religion is based on revelation or deduction? The existence and uberness of the Forerunners was self evident, you don't have to believe in burning bushes, you can still see their works and they are very impressive. Belief in transcendance requires faith but if you are willing to accept transcendance then you can arrive at the Covenant's conclusions through reasoning. Did Truth have faith or did he just make a mistake in his reasoning?
