If you're trying to stand on top of the soccer ball, stand on the back of it (opposite the direction you want to go).. this will make it roll forward..just keep backing up in small increments.

It's easier just to stand next to it (on the slanted bridge) and melee it..as long as you move along with it, the ball will keep you from falling through the gap.

Or just load it in Forge and fly past it :)
