By observation of their combat abilities in the games, thy obviously aren't invincible, and any opponent who is armed with ranged energy weapons stands a good chance against them. Just look at how easily plasma weapons kill them. : Evidence. XD The Flood in Halo 3. Compare them to the ones encountered earlier in the series, and note the length of time between the start of the infection and when you encounter them. They weren't deploying troops into the planets' surfaces in the first place!
