In Response To: Re: A scary thought... (Jillybean)

: If it's biological it will evolve. It doesn't depend on it any more than we
: do, and its own actions may even counteract the natural evolution of the
: organism (for example, eradicating any Flood member which says 'hey, maybe
: we should start farming instead of parasitising' but the evolution itself
: doesn't stop)

I didn't mean that evolution didn't happen to the Flood, I just wondered if the Flood could chose its biology, to concieve of a drop-pod form, and, through an act of will, try out various combinations of cells and forms to create a servicible bio-drop-pod-cocoon-thingy.

From Terminal Five:

Considering the enemy intelligence's raw [computing power], the Keyships' strategy will only remain viable for another [657,000 hours] and this current stalemate has the potential to last considerably longer than that.

It seems like the Flood may have enough 'computing power' to design new forms. It has some degree of control over its shapes, so it may be capable of Intelligent Design.

In vertebrate development we see neural crest cells migrating along predeined pathways. We see epithelial-mesenchymal transitions, cell migrations, then they revert back when they reach their final destinations.

We believe that this is ultimately controlled by genes, via concentration gradients of signalling molecules and cell to cell interactions (migrants interacting with cells at the destinations).

What if the Flood had a degree of concious control over this? I'm not saying that it could do it on a whim. But it could do long term research projects and encode favorable outcomes in DNA for fast, on a whim, switching.

If you understand the signalling pathways, cell fates and competancy, if you understand how to encode good results in DNA, if you can consciously control development in test subjects and if you have the computing power then you could dabble in a bit of Intelligent Design.

You don't need to wait for evolution.

: The flood can survive without hosts, they did so for 100,000 years. Even
: their intelligence survived. If you're asking "can they begin without
: a host" well, I'd have to say 'no', because their reproduction is
: based within the spore exploding forms.

Is it? Look at the fleshy sessile covering of the surfaces on HC. We saw the start of that, the lumps in the cockpits of the Pelicans, the lumps in the corridors. That spread, I assume by absorbing Covenant bodies. But isn't that a vegetative growth? Can Flood 'eat' plants? Can it photosynthesise? Can it farm rabbits? :-)
