There's likely a middle step that wasn't included that complicates things. After each installment, Bungie tries to convince us of one thing. When Chronicles comes out, you'll probably be just as extremely devoted to the other side. You're only looking at this piece of evidence, you're just ignoring all the evidence to the contrary. And I never said the books weren't canon (yeah, it's got just one N, a 'cannon' is something you shoot people with), I said that they wouldn't be the medium in which Bungie finally decided (if they ever do) to deliver the 7ru7h.
