Exact-amundo. Early on in Iris, I was certain that the main goal of the VMC was to tell us what happened to derail the Reclaimation plan. Indeed, MB forced the Forerunners hand - and perhaps all that should have come after, as well, but we don't know for sure. All we know is that MB switched sides and penetrated the Maginot Sphere before the Forerunner were ready.
But some hints exist: Onyx was ready, but empty. 343GS fully expected us to know what was going on. The Spartans inherently knew how to operate Forerunner technology. These are points along a trajectory we cannot see.
This stuff is very fertile content if they want to explore it within the Chronicles. As is the aftermath of the war (i.e. Taming of the Brutes, Human-Unngoy relations, etc).
I'm really looking forward to the Chronicles. I'm not certain of their purpose or content, but I have hope.
