Therefore, not necessarily in a specific sense. You made a mistake there, it IS 'embraced' as you put it. It was never designed to tie into the game specifically. Because of the little involvement Bungie had because of the development hell of Halo 2, bungie deemed it non-canon. However later when they had enough time to go back over it they re-thought that decision and said, well yes it is canon, but we may change this around and stuff. The same goes for the Cortana Letters. Staten (like he always does) said the letters were not canon. That decision changed considering a good chunk of the letters is in the game. And again the same goes for the books as well because he said at one point "they are for better or worse canon" and " we will never tie the books into the game" Well in a smart way they did tie the books to the games when Cortana in her semi-rampant state quotes Dr. Halsey's first meeting with John. And when the children arrived on Reach, and Cortana's meeting with Halsey, before Reach fell. So like the books at the time when Staten said it, Ilovebees is for better or worse canon.
