In Response To: Dreadful Grinding Noise - Xbox 360 Disc Drive *OT* (The Se7enth Prophet) : After watching two DVDs yesterday (Little Miss Sunshine and 28 Weeks Later, : in that order, if it makes ANY difference AT ALL, which I doubt), my Xbox : 360 malfunctioned. I placed in the disc tray The Orange Box to play some : Portal, and to my unfortunate surprise was greeted with a "Play : DVD" on the dashboard. I immediately ejected the disc and then : reinserted it. Still, "Play DVD". Well, with my hopes high, I : pressed play DVD. This is what I got: "This is an Xbox 360 game disc. : To play this disc, place it in an Xbox 360 gaming system" (or : something similar) followed by the same message in what seemed like twenty : languages. : Well, I restarted the system with the disc out of the tray. I got the

You know, it could be a disc reading error. That happens sometimes to my PC's DVD writer drive when it encounters an import disc (like Japanese anime soundtracks); the laser lens assembly would move forwards and backwards trying to get a lock on the start of the track, while simultaneously focusing to see if there was indeed a beginning (which there apparently wasn't), and it'd make a grinding noise as it does so since the head's being driven beyond the allowed endpoints. There's usually a mechanism that prevents damage to the head as it's being overdriven, but it's not designed to be used constantly. Yeah, weird that electronics which are _supposed_ to not overdo themselves perform the exact opposite. Since the Xbox 360's DVD drive is essentially a regular PC's DVD optical drive, I would guess that'd be the same thing. Your problem might be due to a failing laser unit or focusing assembly (which means the laser is essentially trying to read the disc "blinded" at times), which then compounded into a failure of the gears due to constant overdriving. The stripped mechanics could've caused the worst of the grinding sound right before your 360's drive failed completely.
