In Response To: Re: Achievements are Evolving and Do you own a 360 (Rockslider) : Certainly true in my case I admit; I've never been on Live and I don't know : about this Gamerscore business and whether I might find aspects of it : enjoyable. But when you start reminiscing fondly about how achievements : were "the only thing that drove arcade video games for the first 20 : years of their existence", that's not too encouraging to me, because : I'd personally like to get well away from that sort of of old-skool stuff. : The old games may not have had the technology and maturity to attract : players with "their story, graphics, or open-endedness", but : nowadays they can, and that's more the sort of thing I want. : That sounds ok; I guess some achievements may be fun even to the likes of me
Well, Rockslider, you're someone who has spent a LONG time toying around with the "sandbox-y" nature of Halo, for your own personal satisfaction and fun. What's to stop you from doing that if they have achievements in Halo 3? Nothing. You can obviously still try to achieve your own personal goals (as manya round here have been for quite a while). Now, what achievements will do is have a suggestive power. If there's an achievement for killing five elites in a row with the needler, then that will suggest to people that they should try to do that. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so. Maybe for the first couple of months of Halo 3 gameplay, the achievements will have an effect on what sort of tricks/exploration/experimentation people try, but, if Halo 2 is any indication, people will be playing Halo 3 for a long time and after those first few months, all the challenges will be, once again, self-generated. (Remember, Bungie didn't really foresee warthog jumping in Halo 1, so, if there had been achievements for Halo 1, they would not have included getting a warthog to the top of Silent Cartographer, or whatever, but that didn't stop the Halo community from creating such goals.)
