You're right, it does add to the fun for some people. But for some it makes it more like crack: I think the MMORPG creators have really got a good grip on many people's addiction to running around and collecting things (which I do not play because I would be too addicted to just this), and this achievements thing is kind of a version of that. Of course, back in the day we were all creating these achievements for ourselves (no shots fired, etc.). As a matter of fact, the way my friends and I discovered the "pacifism" achievement in Geometry Wars was because we invented the "see how long you can last before taking a shot" game ourselves. I'm just bitter because they know that I like their crack, and they keep refining it.
