In Response To: What's the attraction of points etc? (Rockslider) : So, what's it all about? Can someone explain the attraction? Briefly, bragging rights. More expansively, they're public proof positive that you've done something noteworthy in the game... think "Campaign medals on live" as an example. : And maybe give
Gears of War has some achievements based on the number of "Cog tags" you collect from the campaign maps: earning those show that you've thoroughly explored the maps. (and paid attention... they're not that easy to find, even if you know the in-game cue that they're near.) Dead Rising has some for completing missions in unusual ways, rewarding creativity and replay of the game. Texas Hold 'Em has an achievement for winning a hand with a high card of "9" or or lower... encouraging players to be a bit braver at the table instead of just folding every unpromising hand right off. Need For Speed (I think... it's a racing title in any case) has an achievement that can only be earned by playing someone who already has it. At launch, they seeded the community by giving it to their staff, rewarding those who played in featured games and the like, but now it encourages new players to "mix and match" online instead of staying in cliques. -- Steve likes the idea of achievements as they can encourage a lot of folks to try something new... if used properly by design studios.
