What kept Doom going for me all those years ago was maps created by users. There was a lot of crap, but there was a lot of great stuff too (especially for deathmatch). But it is much more difficult to make maps for a game that actually utilizes the third dimension, especially on in which jumping is prominently featured. Doom was really a 2D game, both because you couldn't jump, and because you could stack objects on top of one another, so there was no such thing as "underneath".
