In Response To: There's pie in that thar sky (Ducain) : I wrote up a little Halo 3 campaign wishlist. Give it a read, and add your : goodies to the list. : http://highimpacthalo.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22788 : JH Nice read. I'm a campaigner myself, so much of what you said really struck home. The best of your list, with a few of my own: * Insta-kills must go!
A shoring up of the physics (and world environment) is the #1 area. I liked H1's physics more, even though they (the rules) may have technically been less realistic. More important for H3 is that Bungie actually have the time to fully incorporate a real world, with real (and static) rules. In H1, it felt like an environment (map, level) was "given", and was what it was without having to add addendum rules to attempt to shore flaws. There was a simple elegance to the levels - they were complete, and all characteristics were emergent from their given laws. There was no negotiation, no explaining. In H2, it felt like the environments never got past the skeletal stage, and that in the end, paint was slapped on and insta-kills were thrown all around to try to patch the thing up. Too many holes, too many exploits. Put it this way: I've played H1 for countless hours. I haven't done 1/100th of all the things I've seen people do on HIH or here on the forums, which says something about H1. Simply put, some of those things are so hard to do that only the cream of the crop can do them. I think that's the way it should be. Again, I would say that the greatest thing about H1 is that it is elegant and complete; the way in which people behave while playing it is entirely emergent based on the individual. The story people can concentrate on story, the trickers tricks, etc. In H2 I think they tried to design towards some specific goals, which somehow made the world less real, and more vulnerable to simple exploitation. I got out of H2 in about 20 minutes. I've never been out of H1. Eh, who am I though? Bungie does excellent work, no doubt. The trouble with feature lists is that they're so easy to write down, but can be so difficult (impossible?) to implement. For H3, I get the feeling that Bungie is really spending a lot of time on the foundation, the basic structure of the world. To me, that's everything. If they present a full world, with complete rules and structure, everything else we want will emerge.
