I assume it plays just like sitting at home playing : with a co-op partner? There are two flavors of online co-op with Gears: the "public" and the "private." The "public" is when you allow anyone to join your co-op game and, in my opinion, defeats the spirit of co-op. The "private," through an automatic private chat feature, brings it very close to the "same screen, same couch" kind of co-op that I remember from Halo 1.
