: JH I played Halo 1 co-op last night with an old pal. After playing halo 2 for so long and returning, it was enlightening. For me it was so different; there were moments when I realized how much I loved Halo. One grenade setting off a massive explosion in the tight hallways of keyes, killing all the spec ops elites. The feeling of exploration on Two betrayals after the huge battle under the bridge (which is way cool in co-op), then snatching the banshee and navigating the canyons. None of that is in Halo 2. But then there's things Halo 2 does better. We tried to board a wraith on Two Betrayals, forgetting that we couldn't! Vehicle boarding works so well and is so natural in the Halo universe, that it was strange not to have it. Banshee dogfighting was not as satisfying; Halo 2 did it better with the various maneuvers you can perform making the banshee much easier and more fun to fly. One thing I finally put my finger on was smoothness. Halo was smoother than Halo 2. Halo 2's enemies darted around, the vehicles spun erratically, and the meleé attacks were quick and jerky. Halo 1's enemies moved smoothly, the vehicles behaved more realistically, and the meleés were smoth and satisfying. Halo 2's gameplay was simply faster and more frantic. If I understand you correctly now, you want to bring back this smoothness while building on new elements (like vehicle boarding) to create a totally cool and new experience? If that's what you mean, I'm all for that. I think Halo 2 had a lot of stuff that worked as well; you just seem to be focusing on Halo 1.
