I have to say, gameplay-wise, Gears of War is the most fun shoot-em-up I've played since, well, Halo 2 (which is a great shooter). But, you're absolutely right that the story is miserable in comparison to Halo. If you don't care about such things, then gears is just as good as Halo (heck, if you just care about graphics, Gears is better than Halo). Personally, I care about such things.
