In Response To: worlds oldest Halo stuntman retires ;( (vshields ash) What can I say? Vern Shields is a class act, and I hate to see him go. :( I used to call him the Vorlon (Babylon 5 reference) because his messages were so cryptic that you could barely understand him sometimes, but the fact is, I always enjoyed talking to him, whether via email or on a forum. He's simply a a good guy, and always encouraging. Vern was actually the first person I came in contact with here at HBO. Shortly after starting to post here, I tried to do a little bit of trick stuff, and had managed to finally reach the bottom of the maproom shaft one day. I took a few photos and posted a thread here about my exploits. Looking back, I'm sure it was just another one of the 'yawn' threads (people had done that loads of times already), but Vern was very encouraging. He said:
duntcha love it !!! oh, and don't forget, the big platform, at security switch shaft. easy enuff single player, just place ur two x-tra hogs for the decent. nice pics too :) go go go ash
Eventually, this led to me and my brother driving a bazillion miles up to Ash's town for a small Halo tournament (more for the purpose of hanging out with Ash and his son than anything else). It's one of the most insane things I've done (WAY too much driving for my tastes), but we had a great time, and got to meet a nice group of people. His whole family is great. One of the best memories of the trip is watching Vern walk up to the small crowd of people assembling for the tourney and saying (loud enough for all to hear) "Ok, I didn't come here to look pretty. I'm came here to kick some ass!" People were looking around like, "Wtf?" It was priceless. Quite frankly, people like Vern are the reason I continue to hang around. No matter how entertaining, games are simply that - games. Big friggin deal. The point is, along the way, you get to meet some great people, and to me - that's really the whole point of it all. Cheers buddy - stay in touch. JH
