In Response To: Floating panels (Rockslider)

: Thanks. I downloaded the vid (woo-hoo, a movie small enough to download over
: my snail-like connection - what a novelty), but unfortunately couldn't
: view it due to lacking the right decompressor. Bah! Foiled again!

: When you say "that's actually how the lighting works", what do you
: mean exactly? These particular panels don't look like they're responsible
: for light creation. They're several feet away from the light source, and
: it's not clear to me why they're there (whether by accident or design).

Hmm, someone slap me. I really should look at stuff before I blab about it. The panel doesn't look like I thought it would, though it may serve the same purpose.

I'm not sure exactly how the lighting works, but I think each light source is an actual object. The panel throws light in whatever direction it's facing. Normally you see a light panel set into a wall so it's throwing light toward you, and you can see a texture for the panel.

In that vid, you can see brightly lit bands on a panel facing a wall. You can see for yourself by going to one of the pulse generator rooms on TB. There are those four glass windows. In the outer part of the room there are pillars, attached to the walls, with the path between it and the window. Facing the window there's a ledge you can stand on. Face the window while standing on the ledge and jump, and you'll see the panel.

The big black polygon in the control room might be the same thing. It may be black and untextured because you're never supposed to see it facing you, and it doesn't need to look bright because as far as the engine is concerned, light is just something that happens to a surface when you point one of these panels at it.

Maybe. That's the way it seems to me.
