Yeah, it should clear to any fan of Halo who has seen Aliens that Sergeant Johnson was heavily influenced by the Sgt Apone character. The Answers.com page for Halo says "Sergeant Johnson is very strongly based on Aliens' Sergeant Apone - both are very enthusiastic, black, cigar-smoking squad leaders", along with many other similarities between Halo and Aliens. There are a lot of them. I, personally, was a fan of Halo before watching Aliens, and when I did see it, I was really surprised by how much they are alike.
