I feel like the odd man out.

In Response To: Is it bad if Halo changed my life? (Dustbunny27)

I feel like a weirdo. I've never had a life-changing experience via video game. I never made friends over XBL because all the people I ever felt even somewhat close to lived so far away, and, well, I've always been a little cyber shy. You see, I'm not the type of person to open up to my fellow gamers and start sharing the type of experiences that could develop into a lasting relationship. I guess I'm little strange that way.

I would have liked to find friends and maybe love through Halo to complement my already very full non-cyber life. I mean, we all know that life is all about connections and though physical (and by physical I don't mean sexual, I mean non-cyber) friendships are great, you can gain so much insight and really see the world from different perspectives when you start connecting with people outside your collection of healthy physical relationships. That's why I was always so upset when people would get on XBL and start cursing and acting like children, because there's really no reason for that kind of hostility, all it does is engenders a sense of disconnect for everyone and really isolates the hostile player.

And when I say "acting like children" I don't mean to suggest that younger players aren't cool. It's important to make generational connections, so having open, frank, and friendly discussions with teenagers can really expand an older person’s knowledge of the contemporary world. Because face it, though we all share a love of halo, some of us older players (I'm 21 by the way) have already started to lose touch with the values of the younger generations. In this world of ever-quickening technological (and, as a result, cultural) change, generation gaps can be made in as little as 4 or 5 years. So, for that reason, it can really help strengthen our societal and cultural ties to interact with people of different age groups, because really, most of us wouldn't otherwise have the chance. And I'm not talking anything creepy here. Unfortunately that has to be addressed what with what's been happening in the news and all. I'm simply talking about the normal types of interactions you would expect on xbox live.

Now that I think of it, maybe Halo has changed my life. I mean, though I met the majority of my girlfriends at parties or at school, and though I've never really connected very deeply with any of my cyber-friends, I have still learned a lot about myself and about interpersonal connections through my daily interactions on xbox live. Truly, xbox does connect us as the commercials suggest. At least, I think that's what they suggest.

: When I say this I don't mean anything petty, like "It got me interested
: in video games" or "It showed me what fun games are". I
: mean my life would be really different without it.

: It all started when me and my brother got hooked on halo, even before we had
: an Xbox. We would always go to the EB and play the machine there.
: Eventually my brother's friend was selling his Xbox, so we bought it, and
: there started our Halo addiction. Halo 2 came out, stood in line at 12:00,
: stayed up till 4 and woke up two hours later for school, shaking with
: insomia and excitment. For Christmas we got XBox Live, this is where the
: big changes occur.

: We started to meet some people in our school who had live. I met one of my
: best friends this way, and also my first girlfriend. I was in 9th grade
: and she was a senior. Eventually the halo craze with all of our friends
: died down a little, my girlfriend broke up with me, and some friends even
: canceled their subscriptions, since college and jobs called.

: My one friend still stayed on, and since he has a family member in the same
: grade (she is his aunt, long story) we started talking, and became better
: friends and she eventually asked me to a winter dance(which was a couple
: of months away). I said yes and we have been dating for over a year now.

: Looking back a couple of days ago I started to wonder, what my life would be
: like without halo. I would have never gone to the prom with a senior when
: I was in 9th grade. The friends I have now I wouldn't have been as good
: with or known at all. And most importantly I wouldn't have my current
: girlfriend.

: Kinda odd thinking what would have happened if the EB's Xbox wasn't working,
: If we weren't forced to go to the mall so often, if we didn't have enough
: money to buy that Xbox from our friend, my whole life would have changed
: drasticlly.
