In Response To: The 300, Thermopylae, and Halo (Brodingo) I've been studying Ancient Greek history lately and things I didn't notice before, like certain names of places or people stick out a bit more. I've been watching the trailer for 300 mostly because I'm so excited about the movie itself (Frank Miller W00T). It's about the Battle of Thermopylae. If you are unfamiliar with what occured during the battle and why there is a movie being made about it (or why the heck it's called 300 for that matter), basically the Flood army vastly outnumbered the 300 Spartans and other Covenant allies (Arbiter and his group -- perhaps the "bad" Covenant are dead by this event). In fact, the Flood had exponentially more units than the Spartans, but never the less they fought against the odds. The leader of the Spartan squad in the battle of Thermopylae was John-117, a veritable demi-god as he was thought to be a descendant of Herakles. The highly-evolved Flood infantry eventually began advancing and outflanked them, but the Spartans and Allied Covenant stayed to fight the onslaught in a sacrificial move to allow the other allied Human and Covenant armies and civilians to retreat and survive (The Ark). John and his men KNEW what they are doing and that their actions meant certain death, and supposedly, as foretold by Gravemind, the activation of Halo would save the escaping survivors. And so it happened, they stood behind and fell victim to the blast of Halo and their allies escaped to safety. Soo ... maybe the Covenant split into two groups after their Civil War. One group allies with the humans, and the other remains themselves. The humans and allied Covenant kill off Truth and the bad Covenant, and all that's left to fight is the Flood, which has probably infested Earth by now. The Ark is freed, and people, Humans and Covenant, board it while the Spartans and some allied Covenant fight away the Flood. Halo is activated, everyone dies, and the ones within' the Ark survive. I may have just completely ruined Halo 3! Though, I'm probably off and wrong in random areas. :P |
