A teenier, littler tidbit

About two weeks ago, I noticed that an Old Mombasa concept sketch by Chris Barrett (pg. 92 of the Art of Halo) was actually based on a real-life location in modern-day Mombasa. In addition, myself and others noted that the sketch was almost freakishly accurate. Well, here's why: he didn't even draw the sketch! You heard me. I was looking for Mombasa images (part of research for a fanfic), when I stumbled across this little gem. If you have the Art of Halo book handy, examine the pg. 92 sketch carefully, and compare it to this one. It is the exact same picture. Every shadow, every stain, every power line is in the exact same spot. There are some differences (the lack of cars, the skylight things, the footlights, etc.) but every single one of them seems to be drawn over the original image. For instance: in the real-life picture, look at the car driving down the center of the road, just to the right of the blue parked one. Notice how the wheels and undercarraige sit just between the shadows of the two buildings on the right. Now, look at that same spot in the concept sketch. The dim image of the wheels and undercarraige can be seen. It's been drawn over quite heavily, but it's there. In fact, pick any detail in the photo, and it'll most likely be there in the sketch. The sign next to the left-hand storefront, the shadow cast by the shack on the right, even the shadow cast by the power lines on the left side of the street. Any difference between the two is the result of heavy-handed sketchwork. Is Chris is lying down on the job? Maybe, maybe not. Hopefully he'll get his act together for Halo 3. I'd hate to see the image of Earth's invasion to be nothing more than the Blue Marble photo with some puffs of smoke added... ;)
